My Start Point

"I have felt the care and love of many people in my life, and they have been an invaluable source of comfort to me throughout my life. I too, want to pass on this love to other people in our society. To help those in need. " - ECSS Volunteer, Peck Wah, 70+ years old

Peck Wah is not a stranger to volunteering.

She has felt the warmth of various volunteers who have helped her get through tough times, especially a long bout of illness that plagued her husband.

“I still remember when my husband contracted cancer.

It was really hard on us. What followed was 15 years of cancer treatments.

In 2010, my husband’s condition worsen, and we would spend a lot of time at the hospital.”

While the period was tough on her and her family, Peck Wah says that the help and love given by others were a source of strength:

“There were volunteers from my church, as well as some of my daughter’s colleagues, who were there for us.” Peck Wah says:

“They would come in groups of four or five people, and they would take me out of the hospital for a change of environment.

While a group brought me out, a few other people who stay and keep my husband company.”

“These women,” Peck Wah calls them her “sisters”,

“would bring me out for tea. They would bring me to the salon to make me pretty again.”

Peck Wah was moved by the kindness shown to her:

“I have felt the care and love of many people in my life, and they have been an invaluable source of comfort to me throughout my life.

I too, want to pass on this love to other people in our society.

To help those in need.” She began volunteering herself in 2011.
