Volunteering by Chance
“It was a stroke of serendipity that I joined.”
Mdm Ivy has participated in a few volunteer programme organised by En Community Services Society (ECSS). She helped out at nursing homes as a make-up artist for the Memory Makeover Programme.
She also sings and dances with the Volunteer Performance Group for residents and befriends them, helping them to record their life stories.
“Coincidentally, I got to know about En Community Services Society when I was looking for my friend at their activity hall. When I got here, I was drawn to the programmes offered, such as the singing sessions, hence, I participated. It was a stroke of serendipity that I joined (the programme at ECSS).”
Prior to joining ECSS's programmes, Mdm Ivy has never visited a nursing home. She had some intentions doing volunteer work even though she did not know much about it. After participating in some of ECSS's training programmes, she learnt about volunteering and decided to sign up as an ECSS volunteer.
She said, “The volunteer assignments offered here is manageable and not strenuous, I can talk and visit residents at different nursing homes, while doing volunteer work."
